Biography
Kevin Horan concentrates his practice in the defense of professional liability, product liability, toxic torts and occupational injury claims, including asbestos personal injury litigation. Kevin has significant litigation and trial experience in both the public and private sectors, having represented both plaintiffs and defendants in a variety of practice areas including tort, trust, commercial, criminal and regulatory matters. He currently represents clients in tort litigation in jurisdictions throughout Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, and Wisconsin; and in federal courts from Illinois to Texas. He has briefed and argued dispositive motions at both the state and federal levels, managed pretrial discovery and negotiated settlements in hundreds of contested matters, and has tried several cases to verdict.
Most recently, Kevin obtained summary judgment in an Iowa district court on behalf of an SST client based on a novel theory interpreting a recently-enacted tort reform statute. He successfully defended the case before the Iowa Court of Appeals, which rendered a unanimous decision in our client’s favor in early 2021. The case is currently under review by the Iowa Supreme Court.
Prior to joining SST, Kevin practiced with a prominent Chicago litigation boutique, where his practice focused on the defense of products and premises liability matters for several Fortune 500 corporations. This experience includes defending malpractice matters on behalf of healthcare providers, hospitals, and health maintenance organizations, and defending attorneys and law firms in legal malpractice litigation. Kevin also practiced law with William J. Martin, Ltd., where he represented attorneys and judges before the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission, Judicial Inquiry Board, Illinois Courts Commission and Illinois Supreme Court. Kevin represented private attorneys and government prosecutors at all stages of the disciplinary process, conducted internal investigations for public and private entities, and represented defendants in federal False Claims Act litigation in U.S. District Court.
Kevin has also represented plaintiffs in cases involving nursing home negligence and abuse, medical malpractice, product defects, breach of employment agreement, and contested trust and estate litigation. Kevin’s previous experience representing plaintiffs gives him a unique perspective and helps him effectively and efficiently pursue satisfactory outcomes on behalf of clients.
While in law school, Kevin was awarded the Philip H. Corboy Fellowship in Trial Advocacy, represented Loyola as a member of the Mock Trial and Mediation Teams, and was a Pro Bono Recognition Award recipient. He also worked full-time in the Consumer Protection Division of the Illinois Attorney General’s Office with the Mortgage Fraud and Predatory Lending section where he assisted in multi-district pharmaceutical fraud and auto-dealership litigation. Kevin gained valuable trial experience with the Cook County Public Defender’s Office where, as a student, he worked in the Homicide Task Force and secured a not guilty verdict in his first jury trial.
