Biography

Stephen Burriesci is Of Counsel in Sinars Slowikowski Tomaska’s Chicago office.

In his 29 years of experience in civil litigation, Steve has handled jury trials, bench trials, and appeals. He has significant experience in commercial, insurance coverage, and employment matters. Steve also has broad experience in tort law, handling cases involving construction, auto/trucking, professional liability, products liability, defamation, and mass tort.

Some recent highlights of Steve’s practice include the following:

Steve obtained favorable rulings on successive motions to dismiss in a case arising out of an employer-employee dispute, representing a former employee of the plaintiff/employer. The court agreed the contractual restrictions on confidentiality, competition, and solicitation were overbroad as a matter of law, and held that this doomed the common law breach of fiduciary duty claim as a matter of law.

Steve obtained summary judgment in favor of the defense of a physical training facility in a tort case, successfully arguing at trial and appeal that the plaintiff failed to show that a physical training session caused the claimed injury, despite the diagnosis shortly following the session.

A trial court granted Steve’s motion for summary judgment in a car vs. pedestrian death case, holding the defendant/employer was not the principal of its employee driver at the time of the accident as a matter of law, despite facts that arguably showed agency.

Finally, Steve recently won a trial in Cook County, Illinois defending a condominium association against a claim arising out of a flood, though the association was warned that the problem at issue would cause the flood and despite plaintiff’s expert testimony.

Steve earned his JD in 1992 from the University of Illinois College of Law.

Steve and his wife, a teacher, enjoy spending most of their weekend time with their three children and watching them play sports. Steve and his wife also like to play tennis when they can.
